SCHOOLS RUGBY: Farmor's lift Floodlit Cup
Farmor's 7 Burford 0.
FARMOR'S in Fairford have clinched the tenth U16s Schools Floodlit Cup Rugby Final in a tense encounter against old rivals Burford.
The two sides had met earlier in the pool stages when Farmor's won 7-6 and the final was almost as close.
The early encounters saw some fierce hits from both sides. Attacking opportunities were limited due to the each team's strong defensive work but it was Farmor's who broke the deadlock midway through the first half through Max Dawe.
A well-timed pass from Laurie Miller picked out Dawe, who had made an excellent inside run. He pierced the Burford defence and scrambled over to score between the posts, Tony Clarke converted to make it 7-0.
Shortly before half-time, Farmor's won a penalty 30 metres out, but this time Clarke could not convert.
Playing with the elements in the second half, Burford looked to have the upper hand but, despite at times camping out on the opposition line, a battling Farmor's team kept them at bay.
The assembled crowd had been treated to a highly competitive game of rugby played by two totally commited teams, showing just how important this competition has become since its inauguration ten years ago by Cotswold School rugby guru Derek Thomas.
