TOWN FLIER: Just the ticket, Mr Fitton
THE new season ticket prices look a win-win situation for Swindon Town fans so chairman Andrew Fitton and his team should be applauded for coming up with an innovative package of genuine savings.
More often than not at this time of year, when the season ticket offers are announced, the reaction is so what'.
But the possibility of seeing a season's-worth of home football for under a tenner a game - less than half the match-day price - has to be a winner.
Whether the deal can entice the trigger figure of 6,000 to sign up by August 1, I have my doubts, though it was encouraging to see almost 7,800 turn up for a meaningless last game of the season on Saturday.
Swindon's marketeers talk of the race to 6,000 being on - it could be a close thing. But even if the target is not met, there will still be a saving of £70 compared to 2007/8 season ticket prices. And it is a real bonus that the season ticket is now transferable, meaning that if you can't make every game you can legitimately offload your ticket.
The 1969 replica shirt for the season ticket holders is a nice touch, too, and, when announced, I suspect the discounts at other outlets may be enough to entice a few more ditherers.
To win three of the last four league games meant the season ended with a feel-good factor, but that should be tempered by the knowledge that those games were against a quartet of the weaker sides.
Again, Saturday's 2-1 win against Millwall was unconvincing and, if the London side had not been so wasteful in front of goal, we would have been looking at a defeat. The number of times they had someone coming in late and unmarked at the back post was embarrassing.
Exonerated from any criticism on that point was 17-year-old Sean Morrison, starting his first game for the club and hardly putting a foot wrong. His towering headers and physical presence recalled the young Matt Heywood - no bad thing.
If Morrison won the man of the match on Saturday, the landslide winner of all the Player of the Year awards was Miguel Comminges and, at the time of writing, he looks like moving on as quickly as Tommy Mooney did after winning the same prize.
Given that it was his first season in Britain, Comminges' efforts were even more impressive. He will become a major player in the Championship.
Losing our best player is a blow, though securing the reliable Jamie Vincent for another year is good news, while Michael Timlin has the capacity to be a class act.
Nice to see the bushy, grey-haired figure of investor Sir Martyn Arbib taking a personal interest in things on Saturday, snapping away with his Box Brownie as the players came on the field. Did he have a grandson who was a mascot, perhaps?
Just when you thought you had seen the last of Best Holdings, the outfit that briefly brought Jim Little, Rufus Brevett and Jorge Veiga to Town, they are apparently expressing an interest in Tranmere Rovers.
NEARLY 700 junior footballers, aged between six and 10, will descend on The County Ground on Saturday (kick-off 10.30am) for the First for Football' festival sponsored by rail-bus operator First Group.
More dads may be on hand than usual as First Group's pitchside ambassador at the tournament will be Sky TVpresenter Clare Tomlinson.
GOOD NEWS that both FA Cup finalists will be coming to the County Ground as part of our pre-season schedule.
Portsmouth's date has been confirmed as Friday, July 18, while Cardiff City, as well as Paul Sturrock's Plymouth Argyle, have also agreed to play.
