Cirencester vicar resigns
Rev James Butterworth
Rev James Butterworth

CIRENCESTER vicar the Reverend James Butterworth has stepped down from his post following a long period of ill health.

Rev Butterworth had been signed off sick since November but decided to end his parish duties for good and take early retirement at the end of March.

He took over the post only a year ago as vicar for Cirencester and Watermoor from Rev St John Channell in October 2006.

He resigned as a governor for Powells School last November.

The decision will take effect from March 31 after the Church of England Pensions Board granted him early retirement on medical grounds.

Mr Butterworth said: "My health has not improved sufficiently to enable me to return to work.

"I want to thank all those kind and generous people who have supported us and sent us messages in the time since I was off work."

The Bishop of Gloucester Michael Perham said: "James and Annie and their family will be moving away from the diocese of Gloucester. We hope and pray that this move will be a blessing for them."

He expressed his gratitude to the clergy and churchwardens who have maintained services at the historic Cirencester Parish Church.

The Bishop added: "It is my intention, working with the Archdeacon of Cheltenham and the churchwardens, to move expeditiously towards the appointment of a new vicar of Cirencester."

The parish website states the post is in a period of interregnum - between reigns.

Anyone who would like to contribute a gift for Mr Butterworth and his family can leave it in an envelope at the parish office.
