Tribute to a real Stow character
A POIGNANT tribute was paid to the Kirby family who died in the Stow horror crash last month.
The funerals of Maggie Kirby, and her husband John and their daughter Julie were held at noon today and hundreds of friends and family turned out to pay a final farewell to the victims of the tragedy which killed seven people in total.
The Stow Royal British Legion formed a guard of honour to follow the funeral procession from St Edwards Church in Stow to the graveside to lay flowers.
Maggie, 61, was a former chairman of the women's section and her daughter Julie was a member of the legion.
Legion members from Stow and even the county branch came to pay tribute to the family who were stalwart supporters.
The Rev David Francis told the congregation that Maggie was a "real Stow character, a Stow person."
He said she came from a big family of nine children based in Longborough and has worked in a number of places in Stow including the old fish and chip shop, the Old Stocks Hotel and the Grapevine Hotel.
A prayer was read out in the church for the child survivors of the crash, Sophie, 9, and Adam Stone, 11.
The coffin, which included the ashes of John and Julie, was carried out to music by Cliff Richard.
Close friend of the family Donna Rose said: "All three of them were part of the community and will be greatly missed. It was a tragedy.
"I don't think we will ever be the same and we won't recover overnight but it is nice to see everyone pulling together as a community. I think we had lost that over the past ten years and this has brought us together again."
