Farm visit teaches children a lesson
 |
| Farmer James Maccurrach, with pupils Florence Loader, Poppy Walton, Ellie Collett and Alice Shaw |
PUPILS from Swell School enjoyed a lesson on life on the farm as part of a n initiative to promote a healthy lifestyle.
The Year 6 students visited Tagmoor Farm where farmer James Maccurrach gave them a tour of the yard and his surrounding fields. They discovered James grows wheat, barley and linseed and rears beef cattle.
As well as getting a chance to see how a farm operates the children were also asked to adopt a field each which they will monitor over the next few months to see how it changes.
As part of the schools commitment to promoting a Healthy lifestyle, school children have already enjoyed cookery classes, a visit to Stow Farmers Market and Simon Weavers Cheese Shop.
A follow-up visit to Tagmoor Farm is also planned for later in the year.
Head teacher Karen Lewis said: "We want our children to have a real understanding of where their food comes from. It is brilliant to be able to visit producers in the local area.
"When James Maccurrach offered to have the children visit we jumped at the opportunity."
Program organiser Judy Morgan added: "It's important to educate children from an early age about the importance of a healthy balanced diet, the source of their food and to encourage them through cookery lessons to realise that food can be fun."
