Major A40 roadworks start on Monday

MAJOR improvement work on the A40 in Gloucestershire between Over and Highnam starts on Monday, May 12 for approximately 26 weeks.

A complete reconstruction of the road, drainage improvements, safety barrier renewal and total replacement of the street lighting is expected to cost in the region of £10million.

The work will be combined with the construction of a new bus lane, on behalf of Gloucestershire County Council.

For the duration of the work the A40 between Over and Highnam roundabouts will have one lane open in each direction. It is anticipated that there will be delays at peak periods and drivers are advised to allow extra time for their journeys.

Businesses along the route will remain open as usual and access will be maintained in at least one direction.

Two lanes will be open into Gloucester until 10am each day until June 29. After that time there will be a contraflow in operation with only one lane open in each direction at all times.

Once the contraflow is in use, all right turns along the road, including the junction with the B4215, will also be closed for safety reasons.
