Garden designers hoping for a Chelsea success

A FURTNITURE maker from the Cotswolds is hoping to carve up the competition at this year's Chelsea Flower Show.

Paul Deakin was selected by James Towillis, director of garden design company Urbanware, to create the furniture for his 2008 exhibition at the annual event.

Paul runs a furniture workshop in the village of Yanworth. His contributions for the garden are a curved bench and a rocking lounger, both made out of ash and oak wood from trees close to his Yanworth base.

From May 20-24 his work will be seen by some 200,000 visitors to the London attraction, as well as millions watching on television at home.

He told the Standard: "It's the biggest thing I've done in my career - it's quite daunting.

"I hope something will come from it as I've invested into it.

"Hopefully I'll stand up against the competition and make people proud."

James Towillis said asking Paul to design some pieces for the company's 2008 exhibit made sense.

"We're based in the same village, it was obvious to include him - he makes well-built English furniture," he said.

All the materials used in the Urbanware garden are sourced locally with the plants from Oxford and the metal structures made from recycled steel from a factory in Dorset.

Mr Towillis added: "As far as a carbon-footprint goes, it's very small.

"It's all about English craftsmanship and sustainability. It's really exciting."

A preview of the exhibition is at Yanworth village hall on Friday from 6-8pm.
