New chairman for Wiltshire

THE chairman of Wiltshire County Council for the final year of its existence has been named as Brig Robert Hall.

The former army commander served 36 years in the Royal Artillery and led the first British arms control inspection on the former USSR. He has been a county councillor since 2005.

President of Wiltshire St John Ambulance and a trustee of two military charities based in the county, he has worked as a civil servant since leaving the army.

He represents Bedwyn and Collingbourne on the authority and was last year's vice-chairman . His new deputy is Melksham Without councillor Roy While.

In 2009 the county and district councils will disappear and be replaced with One Council for Wiltshire.
