Facelift for potholed car park?
THE potholed Cross Hayes car park could be resurfaced in time for the official opening of a revamped Malmesbury Town Hall - if North Wiltshire District Council can be persuaded to cough up half the £30,000 cost.
Town, district and county councillors met highways officer Danny Everett outside the town hall on Thursday to discuss the possibility of completing the work this summer.
A total of £15,000 has been put up by the county council, but the district is to be asked to pay the rest because it benefits financially from the car park through parking charges.
County councillor John Thomson explained: "Although this is a highway it is also a car park, which generates income for NWDC, so we are asking for match funding."
He said he was conscious that the effect of the town hall transformation, costing around £1 million, could be spoiled by car park, which looks tatty and suffers from frequent potholes. "We need to make the area in front of this building look right."
The layout of the tightly-packed site is also likely to be changed to create larger spaces with the loss of up to eight bays.
District councillor Ray Sanderson pointed out the current size of the spaces was illegal. "People aren't able to put pushchairs or wheelchairs between the bays. I personally feel the spaces should be wider."
Mr Everett added: "As soon as I have got the funding agreed I can get through to maintenance." He explained the work programme was already full for the year, but additional gangs would be brought in.
The work is expected to take two to three days and councillors are to investigate the possibility of suspending charges in the Station Yard car park and diverting the town bus there temporarily. Consultation will also be carried out with traders.
