THE politician at the centre of the waste controversy has urged Cotswold residents to be patient throughout the roll-out of the new waste scheme.

Cotswold District Council's portfolio holder for the environment Cllr Mark Tufnell said the new waste service was designed to make residents dispose of rubbish in an environmental way.

"We fully appreciate there are some difficulties and we are working as hard as we can to get round these."

Cllr Mark Tufnell

He said CDC is at the "forefront of all the districts as far as waste is concerned."

The recycling figures are improving, especially cardboard collections.

"We can fully understand there have been a number of annoying incidents for residents who have not had their grey wheelie bins," he said, "but we can only pick these problems up as the service starts. It is not foolproof."

SITA is running mop-up operations on Friday and Saturday if residents have not had their rubbish collected due to lack of bins.

Cllr Tufnell said: "We fully appreciate there are some difficulties and we are working as hard as we can to get round these.

"We are very grateful for everybody's patience and tolerance but I do think in a few months time it will have settled down."

In reply to criticisms the council has not included plastic bottle recycling in their new scheme, Cllr Tufnell said if there was a cost-effective way of plastic kerbside collections the council would be doing it.

It would cost £450,000 a year to provide the service.

Cllr Tufnell said: "We are asking people to take them to the plastic bottle banks across the district, but it is something we are looking into."

This IS a total disaster.

I had to come into cirencester last Saturday, into Victoria Road, and rubbish bags were still strewn across the road.

These bags were due to be collected the previous Wednesday.

Can anybody explain WHY these bags were not collected.

Cllr Tufnell should do the honourable thing and fall on his sword.

The recycling figures are improving, especially cardboard collections.

Logical, as they didn't previously collect cardboard for recycling!

Re Mr Watermoor.
BLACK BAGS are not collected under the new scheme, Black/Grey bins, CDC Beige Bags at £25 for 25, cardboard sack Tins Bottles Papers, once a fortnight. Green and Kitchen Waste every week,
BLACK BAGS NEVER.
I found three lots of Black bags in Chedworth yesterday first Green waste only day, in Chedwrth, like one per cent and that is far from a disaster.
Just one missed bin left to sort out.
I put letters in a few Grey bins out on the wrong day, but they have lids and dogs cant get in so its not a huge problem, My leaflets say what to do and not jump up and down and complain, like some other District Councillors seem to be suggesting, My own bin is barely one third full.
I know there is waste dumped in black bags in Cirencester just alkong form CDC but there are old sideboards and TVs there usually so its nothing new.

Lets have some praise for Mark Tufnell, this is a cutting edge bespoke scheme, not a crib from some other authority and the reality is it is going far too well for the political interests of a certain Political party of a different hue.

I'm waiting patiently for the bin men to come and collect my black bin bags. They can drop by any time, the bags have been there over a week now and they aren't going anywhere.

Why don't CDC allow a cross-over period for 2-3wks so residents who either don't know, or haven't received any new bags/bins still get their rubbish collected, but get a leaflet posted through their door with details of what they need to do, contact numbers for both help and to order bags/bins as well as when this cross over period ends.

This way at least we wont have a health hazard brewing on our door steps.

The Get-ready/Go leaflets I think were badly designed from the offset.

I am surprised that people with problems concerning the new Waste arrangements don't call CDC rather than rushing into print with their complaints. There is a dedicated HELP line - 01285 623 123 - or e-mail carol.burchett@cotsw

All the collections went like clockwork in my area this morning. I had feared that I would have too many bags of unrecyclable rubbish and that my grey bin would be overfilled but I found that, by pressing all my cardboard packaging flat and putting it into the blue plastic bag, I actually had room for at least another bin bag. I reckon that I've halved the amount of bin bags that we put out by crushing our paper packaging.

We've called, several times a week, asking where our bins are. Today's call revealed that it's going to be at least two weeks before our bins are delivered. However, we should put our black bags out on Thursday night for collection either Friday or Saturday morning.

Our new grey wheelie bins were collected for the first time this Monday. They've been full of rubbish since the end of April as that's when the scheme was supposed to start. They are now crawling with huge maggots.
In our area, all of the residents used to put their rubbish out in one big pile on Monday night. At the end of our road, there are two huge piles of black bags that have not been collected. They are now rotting away and being eaten by rats, cats and hedgehogs.
How petty of the council, that they will not take rubbish in a 10p black bag, but they will take it if its in a brown £1 back bought from the council.
Its terrible service that they didn't even give some leeway on the first week of the new scheme... They were supposed to empty out wheelie bins two months ago.

This has nothing to do with being green, its purely a huge cash cow.

I hate this local council and national government and WILL vote them all out at the earliest opportunity. Enjoy your life on the dole queue!

"I am surprised that people with problems concerning the new Waste arrangements don't call CDC rather than rushing into print with their complaints."

I did call twice and the attitude I met from CDC staff was unhelpful, smug and patronising. I was also give the wrong information the first time I called, which is which my bags are still there.

Rushing into print? Don't make me laugh!

to adopt that famous phrase "I Don't Believe it!"

Put some (more) rubbish out this week but find that although it was in a beige bag, the fact that it was put in a standard plastic bin (to protect against the local wildlife) was enough to get a plastic "we're not taking this" tag

Phoned CDC but all they said was "no, they won't collect it if it's in there"

This is a complete mess up, I agree that this is more of a cash stunt than anything, They will collect extra rubbish if it is in a Beige bin bag that costs £1 per bag, but not in a black bag, but you can still put black bags in your grey wheelie bin. I would rather travel to the local tip than give our greedy council any more of my hard earned money.

Neil Rogers, Northleach says...

I have to agree with many others that this is a cash stunt, and a badly thought out one at that.
A typical family with a pet will put out 3 or 4 black bags a week plus cans/bottles for recycling. Now we are expected to put out 3 beige bags A FORTNIGHT!! plus cans/bottles for recycling. The blue bag for cardboard is laughable, and is filled within a few days, and the unhygienic food bin (pig swill?) is a joke.
People are burning their card etc and flushing all food scraps and pet waste down the pan! So drinking the tap water is going to become even more risky.
Recycling = money for the council, fortnightly collections = half the yearly waste collection costs, so why is our council tax going up again above inflation?
I am all for reducing waste and recycling but pressure needs to be put on manufacturers to develop biodegrable and smaller packaging.

I still have green garden bags left over from previous scheme which cost me a £1 each, They wont take them or refund nor exchange them for the new beige ones. Just by calling it a new service they got you by the balls.

I put my food waste bin out Friday for cllection and never got it back!! It had my address on and everyone elses was about... but mine.. vanished!

I rang CDC and they said I have to wait 6 to 8 weeks for a new one... In the meantime I'm to put food waste in my normal household rubbish bin!

And yes... it is very strange why CDC won't collect loose black bags(at least while the change over is happening)as they are exactly the same as that in the grey bin...
