A TOTAL of 13 vehicles were involved in a serious crash on the M4 on Saturday afternoon, police have confirmed.

The crash between junctions 14 and 15 near Swindon resulted in one person being freed from their vehicle by the fire service using cutting equipment.

The accident caused the M4 to close in both directions while an air ambulance landed on the motorway.

Nobody was seriously hurt, but three people were treated by paramedics at the scene, with non-life-threatening injuries.

Wiltshire Police responded to the incident around 3.15 pm with Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service arriving on scene five minutes later.

The scene was also attended by ambulances and National Highways traffic officers.

A Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were called to the M4 westbound between J14 and J15 at 3.20pm for a multi-vehicle incident.

“Four crews attended, one from Swindon and three from Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service, and firefighters worked with the other emergency services to ensure that everyone was safe.”

A South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust spokesperson said it dispatched two double crewed land ambulances.

All lanes of the M4 have now reopened in both directions at the site of the crash between junctions 14 and 15.
